our stay on Terschelling-Island there was a demonstration of the Search and Rescue Services of the Island.<br />We witnessed the launch of the "Frans Hogewind", the Lifeboat stationned at Terschelling taken...<br />Some two miles of flat beach along the "wad"side, the quiet seaside of the Island.<br />Ending in a narrow water-passage to the open North-Sea where ships can enter the Waddenzee between work??<br />At station <a href="http://www.rav.nl/het-werk/waar-rijden-de-ambulances/">Beilen of the UMCG Ambulancezorg</a> (thats where I work) the old (four years and 307.000km) <a href="http://www.rav.nl/hoge-ambulances/">Chevrolet Van was replaced bij the slightly smaller but hypermodern Volkswagen T5 Ambulance</a>.<br />Acceleration of this new baby is x times faster compared to the "Heavy Chevy..."<br />Handling and behavior are much better , so are economy and noise isolation.<br />And the strobes and flashlights are really working! L.E.D. technology!<br />The front headlight is so bright that vehicles see us from a-far and give us clear passage while going to a Priority One call...<br />Who needs a three tone horn now...?<div we did some experimenting on the tabletop.<br />Philip had a bright idea of illuminating the snailshouse from beneath with a little flashlight.<br />Somehow there was a lot of underexposure, noise and banding in this shot.<br />(I think I left the camera on Manual in the setting with the studioflashlights)<br />But the result was stunning and interesting don't you think?<br />Some finetuning with scherping der Geestesvermogens en ter kalmering der Gemoederen, lukte het toch alles werkend te assembleren!<br />Vanmorgen, voor schooltijd Dochterlief bij de Kladden en voor de flitsbuizen bezocht ik de De Historische Scheepswerf Wolthuis in Hoogezand Sappemeer. Tien minuutjes fietsen van mijn huis...<br />Het weer was wonderlijk mooi en Roel Wolthuis, de eigenaar van de scheepswerf, altijd goedlachs, met een stem als een scheepshoorn en met filtersigaret in de mondhoek, vond het prima dat ik wat kiekjes kwam schieten...<br />Jij bent amateurfotograaf hè, informeerde hij nog voor alle zekerheid...<br />Jaja, zei ik, Maar ik doe wel de Fotovakschool!<br />"Oh,...Zo!!"was zijn antwoord...Nou je gaat je gang maar hiero heur... Ik moet nog even wat klusjes doen..." En weg was ie , het klossen van zijn klompen verstierf in de echo's van de oude loods...<br /> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rqGR9sG3J4c/RdSuAvtDhRI/AAAAAAAAABo/4JtTC3Lj3-c/s1600-h/Scheepswerf2.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_rqGR9sG3J4c/RdSuAvtDhRI/AAAAAAAAABo/4JtTC3Lj3-c/s400/Scheepswerf2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5031838011508360466" border="0" /></a><br />"De oude werflocatie op de hoek van het Borgercompagniesterdiep en de Noorderstraat in Sappemeer is met recht een historische plaats, waar sinds het einde van de 17de eeuw achtereenvolgens door de families Raad, Mulder, Berg, Smit en Wolthuis vele honderden houten en stalen schuiten, smakken, pramen, tasken, tjalken, schoeners en bolschepen werden gebouwd en gerepareerd.<br /><br />Het is ook de enige overgebleven, nog herkenbare werflocatie in de veenkoloniën. De eerste bekende scheepsbouwer op deze plaats was Jan Oomkes Raad. Hij bouwde er tussen 1705 en 1739 verscheidene snabben en tasken, kleine houten vaartuigen, hoofdzakelijk bestemd voor het vervoer van turf. Toen Jacobus Franciscus Smit, de oudste broer van Ferus Smit (waarnaar de tegenwoordige werf in Westerbroek is vernoemd), in 1905 de werf te Sappemeer overnam, hadden ijzer en staal reeds hun intrede in de scheepsbouw gedaan.<br />De werf is reeds sinds 1922 in bezit van dezelfde familie Wolthuis, waardoor niet alleen de gereedschappen en machines, maar ook zeer interessante documenten en foto's bewaard zijn gebleven. Door de kleinschaligheid zijn er sinds de jaren 1920 niet veel veranderingen doorgevoerd. De machines uit begin twintigste eeuw staan er nog, waaronder een knipschaar, ponsmachine, drukker en spantenbuiger.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"
